Amélie Poulain - Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain

Film Review

Amélie means hard working, industrious and striving in French. The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain is a 2001 romantic comedy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Written by Jeunet with Guillaume Laurant, the film is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life, set in Montmartre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, played by Audrey Tautou (Amelie Poulain), who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, while struggling with her own isolation. Amelie is a very kind-hearted woman, likes to help others and make others happy. Since small Amelie did not get along with others and do not attend school because of her father thought that she sick and cannot attend school, so Amelie was taught at home by her mother who was a teacher. Amelie was raised by his father who was a doctor since childhood after her mother died due to crushed by someone who tried to commit suicide by jumping from the building.

The story begins when Amelie have grown up and moved home and live independently without the help of her father. Amelie work as a waitress at a cafe in Montmartre 'Corner Bistro' located in Paris and lived in an apartment nearby. In this film, director shows many interesting conflicts for example, the conflict where Amelie tried to help Lucien (Jamel Debbouze) that are often been bullied by his boss to revenge by sabotaging the shopkeepers by sneaked into his house and change the position of items in the house like changing toothpaste with foot cream and change the time clock in the house to control the time so that the boss will got up early to open the store the next day. In addition, among other conflicts there is an interesting conflict that director tries to show where when Amelie met the man that she likes which is Nino Quincampoix (Mathieu Kassovitz) and how she planned everything to make him come to look for her. Amelie can be said as a woman who is very romantic and brilliant since she made many plans for him.

Director ended the story by showing how Nino Quincampoix finally found out that Amelie is the person he’s been looking for but Amelie did not admit it and do not want to be honest with him. After seeing the video provided by Raymond Dufayel (Serge Merlin), Amelie’s neighbor who had known all about her story, Amelie finally admit that she loves him and wants to be with him. Finally, Amelie live happy together with the man that she loved.

For me, this film shows stories that provide a positive impact on me. We should be kind to others and help each other and we will get a good return in the future. No loss for us to be good with others in fact it is a moral values. Film is all about story and a visual can tell a story without a sound. Overall, this film is very nice, interesting, special and different from others and the story telling is unique. Often we can predict what will happen next but not in this film, we cannot predict what will happen next and that what’s make the audiences wonder what will happen and continue to watch and this is what is so special about the film. Praise should be given to the director and the actor and actress as well for this interesting and beyond unexpected movie. I would love to watch this movie again. I give 4 stars out of 5.
